Maghi ਮਾਘੀ
Maghi, the first day of Magh, is the day of the Jor Mela at Sri Muktsar Sahib. It remembers the Chali Mukte, the forty Sikhs who fell at the battle of Khidrana in 1705.

How the date is fixed
Maghi is 1 Magh, the Sangrand of Magh. The date shown follows the SGPC calendar. In 2026 the SGPC placed 1 Magh on 13 January, a day before the astronomical Makar Sankranti.
The Chali Mukte
Forty Sikhs had left Guru Gobind Singh Ji during the siege of Anandpur. Led by Mai Bhago, they returned and fought a Mughal force at the pool of Khidrana. Before the last of them, Bhai Mahan Singh, died, the Guru tore up the letter in which they had renounced him and blessed them as the Mukte, the liberated ones. Khidrana has since been called Muktsar, the pool of liberation.
The Jor Mela
Sangat arrives in Sri Muktsar Sahib for a holy dip in the sarovar. There are diwans, dhadi and kavishri programmes, and a large Nagar Kirtan. Political parties also hold conferences in the town on this day.
At home
Across Punjab, the morning after Lohri is kept with an early bath and a visit to the gurdwara. Kheer made in sugarcane juice and khichdi are traditional.
