What Sangrand means
The word comes from sankranti, the Sun's passage from one zodiac sign to the next. Since the desi calendar is solar, each Sangrand opens a new month. Gurdwaras hold a special diwan on Sangrand where the Barah Maha is recited. Guru Arjan Dev Ji's Barah Maha in Raag Majh describes the soul's longing through the twelve months, and its verse for the new month is read aloud.
Why dates can differ by a day
We count Sangrand on the sunrise-to-sunrise day in which the Sun enters the new sign, as seen from Amritsar. This matches the SGPC calendar. On rare occasions the SGPC fixes a month start by its own decision; in 2026 it placed 1 Magh on 13 January. Where the SGPC has published a date, we follow it.
