Teeyan ਤੀਆਂ
Teeyan is the monsoon festival of Punjabi women. It centres on Sawan Sudi 3 (Teej), with swings, giddha and songs across the weeks of Sawan.

How the date is fixed
Teej is the third lunar day of the bright half of Sawan. The festival season traditionally runs for about thirteen days from Teej. In many villages and colleges, Teeyan events are held on nearby weekends across the month.
Customs
- Peenghan: swings hung from pipal and neem trees, where young women take turns swinging high.
- Giddha and boliyan: women dance in a circle and sing short boliyan, often teasing and full of wit.
- Sandhara: parents send a gift to a married daughter, with clothes, bangles, mehndi and sweets such as ghevar and gulgule.
- Returning home: married daughters traditionally visit their parents' home for Teeyan.
Schools and colleges across Punjab hold Teeyan melas with traditional dress, and the festival has a large following among Punjabi communities abroad.
